Crews battle house fire in South Fork

UPDATE: Fire crews battled a house fire in South Fork on Thursday morning. Officials said the home in the 500 block of Main Street is a total loss.

Assistant Fire Chief Mark Wadsworth, of the South Fork Volunteer Fire Department, said people were home when the fire started but everyone was able to get out safely. He also said the pets did not make it out.

Wadsworth said the fire started in the furnace of the home, in the basement. He said the home is a duplex and the flames spread to the front of the house and then to the roof, which caved in, and to the back of the home.

"As we rounded the corner, the whole front side of the house was fully involved. And then I spoke to the resident of the house, (who) advised me that everybody was out and then we started our fire attack," said Wadsworth.

Wadsworth said firefighters arrived at the scene just before 4 a.m. and called in the Summerhill, Adams Township and Richland volunteer fire departments to help. He said they needed to use Richland's ladder truck to fight the fire in the back of the home.

The Red Cross has been called to help everyone who lived in the duplex.
