Expect to See Black Flash Return in the Future
As far as villains go, Zoom on The Flash was pretty underwhelming. Whereas in season one you actually had Harrison Wells (or Eobard Thawne, if you want to get technical about it) conflicted about undermining the team, and while he always put himself first, you could sense that he did have some admiration for the S.T.A.R. Labs folks. Meanwhile, Zoom was basically just, “I’ll get your speed, Flash!” But maybe we got an interesting mutation at the end of last season when it showed Zoom transforming into what appeared to be Black Flash.
Eagle-eyed fans noticed the similarity in the costumes as Zoom was destroyed by Time Wraiths, and speculated that Black Flash could be on the way. Speaking to EW, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg offered the possibility that Zoom actor Teddy Sears could return as Black Flash:
“Obviously we did that on purpose,” Kreisberg told the site. “We love working with Teddy. He’s such an amazing actor and amazing person, and was so much a part of the success of this show last season.”
For those who aren’t familiar with Black Flash, in the comics the character “appears as an omen of death to those connected to the Speed Force.” That doesn’t mean he’ll necessarily play the same role in the TV show, but the creators definitely want to keep the character in play.
However, we’re not quite sure when we’ll see Black Flash come into the picture. All Kreisberg would say is, “I’m sure we’ll be seeing him in the future.” With the way The Flash likes to play with time, I’m not sure he means our future or Barry messing with the timeline again and running into his future. Either way, hopefully Black Flash has more audacious plans than just wanting to steal Barry’s speed (and since that’s what both Eobard Thawne and Zoom wanted, let’s just have a moratorium on that when it comes to villain motivations; no more baddies can want Flash’s speed).
The Flash returns on October 4th.
